While
this information may not help you to clean your own steno machine,
it may give you a better understanding of what is performed on your
machine during a routine annual machine cleaning.
While some companies refer to this work as a "refurbishment", an overhaul
(cleaning) consists of essentially the same work performed by Stenograph.

When
your machine is checked into our facility, it is checked for the current
settings, a basic diagnostics is performed, and the information is
recorded on our Quality Control form.
If additional problems are encountered, we will contact you with a
description of the problem, and discuss the options with you prior
to the work being done.
Many times, the cases are cracked or damaged from drops or falls,
or rough handling.
You may not even be aware of this damage, as it is usually not noticable
from the outside of the machine.
Depending on the amount of damage, we may be able to repair the shell,
or contact you to discuss replacing the damaged parts.
This
shell has all four mechanism mounts broken off (both on the
top and bottom of the shell - see arrows), It would require replacement
to ensure proper and quiet operation.
|
The
Main Board of the machine is visually inspected for damage or loose
components that can cause intermittent or complete machine failure.
The
screws on many machines can become loose and fall into the board,
causing short circuits which can lead to very expensive repairs. |
Prior
to disassembly, the mechanism is inspected for excessive wear, bent
keys, binding parts, broken or missing parts and overall condition
of the assembly.
Notes are recorded on the Quality Control form for reference.
We will contact you if we find any major problems during this stage
of the overhaul.

The motor and contact assembly are also inspected for excessive wear
or damage.
